Have you ever woke up in the morning, looking at your phone, thinking you didn't set it to charge, and now you don't have time, but you'll charge it in the car on your way to work? How many charging devices does one need to operate a cell phone? How many of you bought extension cords to the power cords? You are not a hoarder if you have a floor full of crawling wires, and that's acceptable, but not for long.
What began as a college innovation competition, the idea of having wireless electricity has emerged our minds. A 21 year old Meredith Perry, astrobiology student at the University of Pennsylvania, a daughter of a plastic surgeon, had an American dream - make something that no one thought possible. With more than a few bumps in the road, she began to research multidisciplinary fields, trying to figure out how to invent the first wireless-charging device. The answer was in piezoelectricity - the power generated by the sound waves going through crystals. That was the birth of her company uBeam, which is currently located in Mountain View, California in the United States.
Meredith's first prototype didn't attract the start-up funds she was looking for, until she met Scott Nolan, the member of Founders Fund. With a group of investors she received $750,000 as the initial start-up investment. Today uBeam holds a large number of patents, and very powerful group of venture capitalists, including Mark Cuban, who's invested $10 million dollars last year.
Soon, outlets will be replaced by 5 millimeter thin uBeam charging trasmitters. The product is planned to be available on the market within less than 2 years. Cords and wires will become an annoying inconvenience of the past. We are starting to see the end of the tripping hazard era. And not just that - the batteries will shrink significantly in size, thus reducing environmental effects associated with their disposal. There will be no need for international plugs, instead people will decorate their walls with the uBeam transmitters. This revolutionary innovation will have an impact not just on billions of people, but will also effect the businesses of the billion dollar industries.
